My research goal is to develop FINEscope, the first non-invasive imaging tool for diagnosing peripheral neuropathy by providing structural information on free intraepidermal nerve endings (FINEs). Current methods for obtaining FINEs information are invasive and unsuitable for diabetic patients. FINEscope uses third-harmonic generation nonlinear optics based on the 1260nm femtosecond laser source and is designed for terminal distal extremities. It will provide unstained and label-free FINEs imaging, which is clinically capable of diagnosing PN. FINEscope could be a valuable tool for diagnosing PN and meeting the unmet clinical need for screening, differential diagnosis, surgical evaluation, and efficacy assessment of radiculopathy treatment in the future.
